North Shore Vancouver Grade 5 Elementary Schools Embrace Weekly Floorball League
Every Tuesday afternoon, elementary school gymnasiums across North Vancouver come alive as Grade 5 students lace up for the Jr. Canucks Floor Hockey league, powered by the Canucks for Kids Fund (CFKF) and the Jr. Canucks Floor Hockey Program. What was once just another school day has quickly turned into a weekly celebration of movement, teamwork, and community—one that students now look forward to all week.
At the heart of this initiative is the Jr. Canucks Floor Hockey Program, a flagship grassroots effort supported by the Canucks for Kids Fund. Through CFKF’s investment, every elementary school in North Vancouver received a full equipment package—40 sticks, balls, and nets—removing barriers to participation and ensuring all students could play, learn, and compete on equal footing.
“It’s been an incredible program—it’s been great,” said Tine Parker, District Administrator for Healthy Futures, highlighting the league’s impact on student well-being and engagement.

The weekly league showcases floorball, a fast-paced, inclusive indoor sport closely related to hockey but designed with accessibility in mind. Its lightweight equipment and emphasis on skill, creativity, and movement make it especially well suited for school environments. As part of the Jr. Canucks ecosystem, the league doesn’t just teach sport—it teaches confidence, cooperation, and joy in physical activity as well as the Team motto – DREAM…discipline, respect, excellence, attitude and mindset.
Each Tuesday, schools face off in friendly but competitive matchups, with students learning the value of fair play, teamwork, and resilience. Teachers have observed noticeable gains in physical literacy, self-confidence, and social connection, while students thrive in a structured, positive sporting environment.
Parents and community members regularly fill the sidelines, cheering on the young athletes and reinforcing the sense that this is more than just a league—it’s a community movement. That visibility and support further strengthen the connection between schools, families, and the broader North Shore community.

As the season continues, enthusiasm only grows. The Jr. Canucks Floor Hockey league, backed by CFKF, stands as a powerful example of how targeted investment in school sport can ignite participation, foster lifelong healthy habits, and bring communities together—one Tuesday afternoon at a time.
Schools interested in learning more or expanding their involvement are encouraged to connect with their physical education teachers or administrators to support and grow this impactful Jr. Canucks Floor Hockey initiative.
